With the temperature finally below 30 degrees here in Dubai it’s time to play outside again. And time to work on organising outdoor toys!

After a long, hot, dusty summer, your outdoor toys probably need a bit of a clean-up and organisation. That’s exactly what I did for this little boy’s toys.

Previously the toys were stored on two metal racks and a bookcase placed outside in a covered alley leading to the kitchen door. The toys were covered in thick, dirty sand because they had not been played with over the hot summer months. So I took everything off the shelving and out onto the grass, where I hosed them down before starting work.

Underneath the grime, most of the toys were in good repair. I sorted the toys into types, and then looked at what we could purge. A few shuttlecocks had expired in the heat, a kite was torn and tangled, and a bow was broken beyond repair. I threw these  away, and put a couple of duplicate frisbees and balls in the donation pile.

Supplies

Fortunately I didn’t need to buy any containers for this project as we had wooden crates and open shelving already. After condensing the toys I realised that we didn’t need the old bookcase, so we donated it. Then I relocated the shelving racks to the perfect spot outside the back door. I also had a wire waste paper basket that I have been desperate to put to good use, so I had all the containers I needed at my fingertips without having to go shopping.

Make it fun!

Next came the fun bit – containing and styling! With such bright colours and so much space available, I had some fun with this project. I’m really pleased with the way that it turned out. Especially once I added a rag rug and the cute metal sign. After a few quick photos, my little client was happily playing with his toys on the lawn, delighted that he can now see what he has to play with and easily reach them by himself.
