10 simple ways to show your home some love

Our homes are hardworking places that we often take for granted. They provide us with shelter, warmth, security and comfort. A refuge from the stresses of work and school. A kitchen table for those we love to gather round. A comfy sofa to curl up and watch TV or read a book at the end of a hard day. A canvas to decorate and express our personalities, all while keeping our belongings safe and secure.

Our homes work so hard for us… don’t they deserve a little love too?

So I’ve put together a list of my ten simple, quick ways to show your home a little love this Valentines Day, and every day!

10 ways to show your home some love:

Open the windows:

Throw open those windows, even for a few minutes, and let some fresh air circulate.

Hang up your clothes:

More clothes on the floordrobe than in the wardrobe? Pick up your clothes and either hang them up again, or pop them in the wash.

Change the sheets:

There is nothing like the feeling of sinking into fresh sheets on the bed at the end of a hard day. If you don’t already have a laundry routine, have a think about how often you need to change your sheets and pop the next few dates in your diary as a reminder.

Fluff up your towels:

Refresh your towels – pop them in the wash on a high setting, adding a capful of white vinegar instead of fabric softener to the wash. (Never use softener on towels as it takes away their absorbency). White towels will be whiter, and all colours fluffier and softer. Fold them prettily and add a touch of luxury to your bathroom.

Sparkle your sink:

The whole kitchen looks tidy if the dishes are done. Get into the habit of washing up and putting dishes away every evening, and giving the sink a quick wipe round. If you are greeted by a sparkling sink each morning when you go to make your first cup of coffee, you’ve already got your day off to a great start!

Frame it:

Everyone has a pile of artwork of photos that they have been meaning to frame. Take ten minutes to actually do it! Or swap some of your frames out and display some more up to date photos. Children also love to see their artwork up on display, so get them involved and ask them what they’d like to see up on the wall.

Shop your home:

The simplest (and cheapest) way to make a few home updates is to “shop your home” and use what you already have. Our eyes get used to things when they are there all the time, and we stop really seeing them. Ring the changes… swap cushions, move trinkets and artwork around… and declutter anything you’ve fallen out of love with.

Rainbowtise:

Long-term readers of the blog will know that I am obsessed with arranging things in rainbow order. Books, clothes, storage boxes, medication (yes, seriously!)… I just love my little pockets of rainbow colours scattered around our home. What could you rainbowtise?

Scent:

We focus so much on what our homes look like, but what does it smell like? If it’s more “Last Night’s Curry” or “The Cat Lives Here Too”, go and grab that posh candle that you’ve been saving for best, and light it. Or keep the windows open for a little longer.

Give yourself some flowers:

Fresh flowers make all the difference! Whether you grab a bunch of daffs next time you’re at the supermarket, or pick some blooms from the garden, a vase of pretty flowers will instantly brighten up a room.
