Another school year is coming to a close and it’s time to say goodbye to our children’s teachers. Have you thought about how you are going to remember these special people in our children’s lives? How you are going to help preserve your children’s precious school memories?

School memories - How to collect and preserve teacher messages in a picture book for a future graduation gift

As regular readers will know, I am obsessed by memory-keeping! When my son was born, I took some time to research ways to keep his childhood memories without it becoming a chore. One of my favourite ideas was a book of memories from every teacher throughout his school days.

The idea is simple. Choose a picture book that has a particular meaning or relevant theme. It doesn’t matter what book you choose, as long as there is plenty of blank space in the pages to write on. Dr Seuss books are popular for this purpose, especially “The Places You’ll Go!“*. We chose “Oh, The Thinks You Can Think!“*, another Dr Seuss favourite, as it seemed quite fitting.

Then, each year at the end of the summer term, ask your child’s teacher to write a message to your child inside. Do this every year, but do it in secret so that your child doesn’t know about it. Fast forward to graduation time, and you have a book crammed full of memories to give them. Memories of teachers and classes, talents and achievements – all together in one special book. Written in their familiar teachers’ handwriting.

I started to do this with Finn’s first nursery teacher when he was 18 months old. He’s seven years old now and already the book brings back special school memories for me each June when I dig it out to give to this year’s teacher. (Is it me, or does that time come around more quickly as each year passes?)

Our boy loves looking at albums, scrapbooks and family history, so I am sure this will mean a lot to him when I finally get to hand it over. But not for another 11 years time… it’s all going too quickly as it is!

How do you keep memories of your children’s school days? Have you tried this?

I’d love to hear what book you would choose for your teacher messages!
